Sartre’s Existential Philosophy in Contemporary Perspective

It has been almost 35 years since Jean-Paul Sartre died, and about 60 since he became a renowned figure at the end of the Second World War – yet students today continue to find his early existential philosophy gripping.  While some scholars share that opinion, many have questioned Sartre’s work.  In this seminar, we will revisit Sartre’s early work, particularly his popular and celebrated lecture, “Existentialism Is a Humanism,” and consider three influential views of Sartre:

  • That he was the great authentic experimenter (the position most students, even today, gravitate toward);
  • That he was the pied piper of nihilistic rebellion (a position most often taken by intellectuals inspired by classical philosophies); and
  • That he was a limited Cartesian rationalist (the view of many subsequent philosophers).

Turning then, briefly, to a review of what some contemporary continental philosophers call “critical poststructuralism,” we will rethink Sartre, not so much to affirm, attack, or dismiss his work, but to understand its enduring impact and appeal – which in turn reveals much about the tensions, contradictions, hopes, and challenges of life in contemporary Western societies.

No prior knowledge of Sartre, philosophy, or history is required.  Just a willingness to reflect and engage with others.
